Dubai: Godolphin will be hoping that their juveniles can make their presence felt at Sunday’s Irish St. Leger card which features a pair of exciting seven-furlong contests for tomorrow’s would-be stars.

Herald The Dawn and Birchwood takes their chances in the Group 1 National Stakes while Vitello runs in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes, both worth a generous €300,000 (Dh 1.25 million) in prize money.

Herald The Dawn bids to follow in the footsteps of his famous brother Dawn Approach who clobbered Hong Kong-sensation Designs On Rome by 4 3/4 lengths in the race in 2012 before going on to win the Dewhurst Stakes (G1) and the 2,000 Guineas (G1) the following year.

Trained by the legendary Jim Bolger, the son of New Approach has won his last two starts including the Group 2 Futurity Stakes on his most recent start over this course and distance.

“He’s very well. Obviously we’d prefer good ground, but he did manage to win in the soft at the Curragh,” Bolger told the Godolphin website. “We’ll have to take it whatever way it comes.

“He’s in very good form and he’s a very good two-year-old.”

Richard Fahey, who is trains Birchwood out of his Malton-based stables, added: “He’s in good form - we’re happy with him - but he’s got to step up another gear.

“It was good to soft last time at Goodwood where he was probably a bit unlucky. As long as it doesn’t get too extreme (the ground) I’ll be happy. It’s a tough race on Sunday - all the good ones are there.”

Vitello has not raced since her Fairyhouse victory three months ago but is nonetheless an notworthy contender for Mick Halford.

“The form of her maiden has worked out well and I don’t see the step up to seven furlongs being a problem for her,” the handler said.

“She’s been fine since her last run, we’ve just give her time, and we’re looking forward to running her again. She does have a preference for good ground, though, so I hope they don’t get too much rain.”

The horse he will have to overcome is Aidan O’Brien’s hat-trick seeking Ballydoyle while Dermot Weld saddles the unbeaten Tanaza.
