Dubai: Team Godolphin has enjoyed some outstanding success with their juvenile string in Australia this season and the well-bred Impending continued that trend when making an eye-catching career debut at Rosehill on Saturday.

A son of former champion Lonhro out of multiple Group 1 winner Mnemosyne, Impending established himself as an exciting prospect for the future with a two-and-a-half length victory over Eckstein in the Pluck@Vinery Handicap over 1,100 metres.

His performance, and in particular his turn of foot in the straight, has made a lasting impression on Sydney’s leading jockey James McDonald who told news.comau: “I’ve never sat on the horse before but he gave me an unbelievable feel. He is a lovely horse.”

Trainer John O’Seha was no less impressed when he said, “I think he will be a serious racehorse in the Spring. He might just be a bit special.”

Impending become the 17th juvenile winner for Godolphin in Australia this season after Astern, Telperion, Souchez and Calliope.

Elbaorating on the youngster’s belated debut O’Shea told the Godolphin website: “He’s got prominent sesamoids which could cause suspensory problems.

“It helps that he is lightly framed, but he’s a real horse.

“We will assess him over the next week or so and decide whether he goes to the paddock or perhaps has another run.”

The run could be in Brisbane, but O’Shea stressed he would not rush things with his youngster.

“Whatever happens we will look after him and be kind to him” the trainer said. “I think he will be a serious racehorse in the Spring. He might just be a bit special.”

McDonald was notching his 85th winner for the 2015-2016 season as he chases a century of wins for term.

No jockey has ridden 100 Sydney winners in a season since the Australian Racing Hall of Famer Darren Beadman set the all-time record of 164 wins in 2006-2007.

Meanwhile, Oaks aspirant Artesian finished 12th in a hot renewal of the Group 3 Schweppervescence Stakes for fillies at Morphettville, Australia.

Placed at 1600m and 2000m in two runs in Melbourne last month, the three-year-old son of Hard Spun was not disgraced as he battled strongly in a close group of 10 horses who finished bunched together in the 1800m contest.

O’Shea was hoping that Artesian would join stablemate Asinara in next month’s Oaks.

At Caulfield in Melbourne, Godolphin’s Java, who strung together four wins between December 2014 and January 2015, had to settle for the 11th position in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes.

G1 Victoria Derby third Nozomi, trained by Lee and Anthony Freedman, was a non-runner.

O’Shea sent out 11 runners in all on a busy day’s racing that also saw Godolphin horses in action at Kyneton and Kembla grange.
