Gloria De Campeao captured a slice of history in winning the Dubai World Cup race on Saturday.

Dominating the race from start to finish, the French raider, ridden by R. Pareira, became the first winner of the World Cup at the new Meydan race course.

The 15th running of the Dubai World Cup attracted a 14-horse field for the Group 1 race. Pascal Bary trained the winner who took home a purse of $10 million.

Lizard's Desire came second and Godolphin's Allybar finished third.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was present at Meydan, the biggest horserace course in the world.

In an interview with CNN, Shaikh Mohammad said the new Meydan facility reflects Dubai's policy in developing projects with a comprehensive vision.

He said Meydan is new, practical proof of the competitive spirit that distinguishes Dubai.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, shaikhs, ministers, senior officials, dignitaries and over 63,000 fans witnessed the world's richest race meeting.

Earlier, Kinsale King held off the challenge from favourite Rocket Man to land the Gulf News-sponsored $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen.

Dubai Sheema Classic

20.35 Dar Re Mi won the $5 million Dubai Sheema Classic, sponsored by Guangsha Group. In 11 of the last 12 of this Group 1 contest, 11 different trainers have entered the winner’s enclosure. The Dubai Sheema Classic was easily one of the most competitive and open races on the $26.25 million card.

It was a two-horse race early on, but with Presious Passion and Golden Sword setting the pace. But those two faded and the field bunched up. Dar Re Mi, Buena Vista and another contender, Spanish Moon, vied for the win down the front straight.

Dar Re Mi's jockey William Buick managed to pull them away, handing a victory to owner and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Dubai Duty Free

19.55 Al Shemali, owned by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Al Maktoum, won the $5 million Dubai Duty Free, a Group 1 sprint sponsored by Dubai Duty Free. Al Shemali beat favourites like Presvis, Courageous Cat and Godolphin’s five-year-old Kingmambo horse Alexandros, partnered by Frankie Dettori, to win this race.

Al Shemali started slow and allowed Take The Points to set the pace. But then Take The Points faded and Al Shemali dueled it out with Bankable before taking the lead for good. Favorites Presvis finished 11th and Alexandros 14th.

It was the third victory for the royal family on Saturday in the eight-race, $26 million program.

Dubai Golden Shaheen

19.15 Kinsale King from USA won the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen, a Group 1 sprint on Tapeta over six furlongs, sponsored by Gulf News. The favourite to win this race was Gayego, trained by Godolphin’s Saeed Bin Suruor. The Gulf News-sponsored race has traditionally been dominated by American sprinters.

Kinsale King, which races for Patrick Sheehy's Super Horse Inc., got off to a good start and maintained the lead throughout, fending off a brief challenge from Rocket Man, who finished second. One World came in third in the fifth race on the $26 million program on Saturday.

The victory is the fourth in a row for the 5-year-old gelding Kinsale since October.

Rocket Man, a highly touted sprint star bred in Australia, got off to a slow start but came on at the end.

16.54 Jaafer, owned by  Shaikh Khalifa Bin Mohammad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, won the Dubai Kahyala Classic race at the Dubai World Cup at Meydan Saturday. Dubai Kahyala Classic is sponsored by Emaar.

Jaafer has come on strong down the straight to easily win the $250,000 Dubai Kahayla Classic to open the Dubai World Cup card.

The horse, owned by a member of the Qatari royal family, appeared to come out of nowhere and passed one of the favorites No Risk on Saturday.

The pack was bunched up before Jaafer emerged to take the lead and win by several lengths to offer up a surprise in the opening race of the $26 million program.
