Dubai: Up until recently, talented Irish jockey Oisin Murphy was probably not even thinking about next Saturday’s Epsom Derby (G1), Britain’s richest and most prestigious race, in which he finished a respectable fifth last year.

However, the scenario has changed dramatically following the 19-year-old’s milestone victory aboard Karpino in the German 2,000 Guineas at Cologne on Monday. Not only did the winner provide Murphy with a first Classic success, he has also fired the Irish teenager’s Epsom hopes.

Karpino’s connections, Qatar’s Pearl Bloodstock, for who Murphy rides as the second jockey to Italy’s Andrea Atzeni, are weighing the options of taking the Andreas Wohler-trained colt to the English Classic.

“It’s most likely the German Derby (July) will now be next on his programme but he is entered in every big race,” Wohler told the Racing Post.

“He definitely stays and all the big mile and a half races will be options.”

Murphy, who partnered Red Galileo to take the fifth spot behind Australia in last year’s Epsom Classic, subsequently spent the winter in Dubai where he was the retained rider for the Jebel Ali Stables. He rode 17 winners including Forjatt in the Listed Jebel Ali Mile.

Meanwhile, several leading contenders for the Derby worked at Epsom during the Breakfast with the Stars event on Tuesday.

Among those was Godolphin’s Dante (G1) second Jack Hobbs, who was ridden by stable jockey William Buick for the first time during his workout.

Trainer John Gosden, who was supervised the high-profile workout, said: “I wanted William to tell me how he handled the hill and Tattenham Corner. He was very happy with him.

“The ground quickened up a lot at York and he got stacked three wide so I don’t think he had a very satisfactory run through the race. As Frankie said, he is an unfinished article and a lot rawer than the other horse.”

Racing Post Trophy winner Elm Park and Derby favourite Golden Horn, who is also trained by Gosden, also worked together with Goodwood scorer Storm The Stars, whose owner Shaikh Juma Bin Dalmook Al Maktoum, is yet to take a decision on his participation at Epsom next Saturday.

Coolmore representative Kevin Buckley also revealed that Irish 1,000 Guineas (G1) runner-up Found is bound for the Derby together with stablemate Hans Holbein.

However, English and irish Guineas winner Gleneagles is unlikely to run.
