Augusta, Georgia: Defending champion Danny Willett and world No. 5 Henrik Stenson were among a number of high-profile players to miss the cut at the US Masters on Friday.
Americans Bubba Watson and Zach Johnson, Argentine Angel Cabrera and South Africa’s Trevor Immelman were among other former Masters champions who failed to make the weekend.
England’s Willett made a quadruple-bogey at the first hole on the way to a second-round 78 that left him on seven over par, one shot above the cut mark.
Swede Stenson, who won his first major title at last year’s British Open, added a 75 to his opening 77 to finish at eight over and continue his struggles at the Masters in which his best placing in 12 visits was tied for 14th place in 2014.
Watson, Masters champion in 2012 and 2014, made eight bogeys in a second-round 78 after starting with a 74 to end on eight over.
Chilean amateur Toto Gana suffered the ignominy of finishing bottom of the field on 17 over par, but the 19-year-old did not seem too disheartened.
“I feel really, really good,” he told reporters. “This experience is amazing, I never been in an experience like that, so I am really, really, really happy.”
