Dubai: Record seven-time Ladies European Tour Order of Merit winner Laura Davies is backing Charley Hull to end her wait for victory at the season-ending Omega Dubai Ladies Masters this week.
Hull, 17, started her debut season with five consecutive second place finishes, totalling nine top tens and became the youngest member of a Solheim Cup team this year. However, she is yet to get her first professional win under her belt.
“I think she needs to get the win sooner rather than later,” said Davies. “She had another chance last week [finishing tied for fifth in India]. It would be nice to see her win one — but not at my expense — this week.
“She opened her career with five second-place finishes, which I don’t think will ever be repeated again, in men’s or women’s golf.
“And she showed her personality at the Solheim Cup, and was the star of the show and probably won it for Europe. With what Charley put in for the rest of team you’ll hear about her more and more. If she can get that win, I don’t think with her mentality she’ll be worrying about that, but I just think it would be nice for her now.”
Hull currently leads the Rookie of the Year standings with €124,144 (Dh620,000) in earnings, €11,337 ahead of next-placed Holly Clyburn, who has one win and two additional top tens in her first season.
Clyburn, 22, can only hope that she finishes at least third, while Hull finishes below fourth in order to overtake her. Meanwhile, if Hull misses the cut, Clyburn can afford to finish as low as eighth.
