Wellington: The UAE’s top amateur golfers will compete in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at the Royal Wellington Golf Club in Wellington, New Zealand, from October 25 to 29.

Representing the UAE will be Ahmad Skaik and Mohammad Al Hajeri, while Dubai Creek member Rayhan Thomas, who is ranked 26th in the amateur world rankings, will be representing India.

This is one of the most prestigious amateur events as the winner will be invited to the Masters and, in a change introduced this year, The Open Championship.

Skaik has had a strong year with individual and team gold at the GCC Golf Championship. He also finished inside the top-10 of the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) Order of Merit and had three appearances on the Mena Tour. With these accomplishments, he should head to New Zealand with confidence.

Al Hajeri plays for the UAE Under-18 and senior teams and recently competed in the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation Junior Championship in Hong Kong. He will be hoping that experience helps him make the cut this weekend.

“The course is in great condition,” said Al Hajeri. “With that said, the landing areas on the fairways are tighter than I am used to and the greens are playing very fast. In the afternoon, the winds will pick up giving all the players even more of a challenge. I am excited to play and the talent is endless here. I am just going to take it a shot at a time and enjoy this experience.”
