Dubai: Back-to-back Omega Dubai Desert Classic champion Stephen Gallacher has been made a global ambassador by event organisers golf in DUBAi.

The 39-year-old Scotsman became the first player to defend the Coffee Pot trophy on the event’s 25th anniversary in February after beating off competition from all 20 former winners.

Gallacher has now finished 10th, second and first twice in the last four of his 14 appearances in Dubai. He truly owned the Majlis Course at Emirates Golf Course in the third round of this year’s event, when he shot ten under par over his last ten holes to fire himself into contention on the final day.

His role as global ambassador will see him wear the golf in DUBAi brand as part of a three-year deal until 2017. He joins the likes of fellow golf in DUBAi ambassadors Mark O’Meara, Jeev Milka Singh, Laura Davies, Zane Scotland and coach Peter Cowen.

“I love Dubai, I love the tournament and it will be a great honour and privilege to be a part of the golf in DUBAi team that has done a tremendous job in raising the profile of this brilliant city on the global stage,” said Gallacher.

“What’s happening out here in the UAE and certainly in Dubai is just so impressive to see. From my experience, I can tell Dubai is one of our favourite stops on the European Tour.”

World’s top 50

World No 37 Gallacher, a winner of three European Tour events, is now eyeing a Masters and Ryder Cup debut this season after breaking into the world’s top 50 with a tied for sixth place finish at the WGC Cadillac Championship recently.

“Stephen is a fine player whose on-course performance creates a lot of excitement,” said Mohammad Juma Bu Amim, vice chairman and CEO of golf in DUBAi. “Like everyone, we are really impressed by his outstanding golf talent, dedication and natural flair.

“He is fast becoming an influential figure in the world of golf and his constant quest for high performance is in line with Dubai’s vision of making the city the hub for all things golf. Indeed, we are honoured to have him on board.”
