Abu Dhabi: After three days of unbelievable golf and with a six-stroke cushion going into the final round, disaster struck three-times champion Martin Kaymer as he squandered a brilliant opportunity to clinch his fourth Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship title — a blow to that the German may take a while for him to recover from.

After going without a bogey through 47 holes, he suffered the first jolt of the day when he bogeyed on the sixth. Two holes later, there was a double bogey on the ninth hole but it was the triple bogey on the par-four 13th that completely dashed his title hopes.

Kaymer summed up his day’s showing as ‘surprising and a little shocking’. “I don’t really know how to put it into words. It was very, very surprising today. Started off well and hit a couple bad tee shots and cost me double-bogey and a triple bogey,” a dejected-looking Kaymer said.
