Dubai: Supamas Sangchan does not say much. She prefers to let her funky trousers and golf clubs do the talking.
On a perfect Wednesday morning at the iconic Emirates Golf Club, scene of the season-ending Omega Dubai Ladies Classic, the Thai looked fresh, sprightly and colourful. Very colourful, and happy.
After all, she had just upstaged some of the best golfers on the European Ladies Tour (LET) to grab the lead after an evenfuly day’s play.
With several players emphasizing that the greens were pretty “fast”, Sangchan hardly made a wrong move and then said: “I play three events like this. I play good, so it gave me confidence to play good here.”
Acknowleding that she liked the golf course with an emphatic “of course”, the 21-year-old admitted that putting would be the key factor over the next three days and that she would continue to, “try to”, keep putting well.
After sending out a strong message for her rivals, Shangchan allowed herself a little smile. For the most part, she looked serious and answered questions in one sentence, sometimes even just one world, or with a shake or nod of her pretty heady.
However, on the course, Shangchan, cut a totally different figure. Confident and full of purpose, she never dropped her guard once and stayed focused on “playing good” golf.
Purists of the game might frown at her multi-coloured trousers and call them over the top in respect to traditional golf shorts, but there was a lot to admire about the way she wielded her clubs that have put her in pole position for a shot at the rebranded tournament’s sparkling new trophy, come Saturday.
