Abu Dhabi : Flamboyant Englishman and current World No 12, Ian Poulter, is set to turn on the style at this week's Abu Dhabi Golf Championship — the European Tour-backed 2010 curtain raiser.

Known for both his eye-catching outfits and his superlative golf skills, the 33-year old is hoping to make it third time lucky at the Championship, running January 21 to 24 at Abu Dhabi Golf Club, after finishing in tied 10th and 9th in 2006 and 2008 respectively.

And Poulter, who has 10 professional wins under his belt, is planning to go all out to reverse roles with defending champion and fellow countryman, Paul Casey, the current World No 8.

Household name

"I would love to win the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship title. I was really disappointed not to be able to play in 2009 after an eye operation so I am looking forward to it even more this year. After a refreshing break and some hard work on my game over Christmas, I feel really well prepared," said the 2000 Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year.

"I've been to Abu Dhabi a few times now and it's a beautiful place and a stunning golf destination. I'm looking forward to seeing how things have changed since my last visit."

Poulter became a household name in 2004 during the Open at Royal Troon, when he sported his now infamous Union Jack trousers, and has since boasted a virtual rainbow of colours.

However, it's the eight times European Tour winner's sublime approach to play and ability to hit the greens in regulation which have cemented his place in the annals of golf.

Since turning professional in 1996, Poulter has continued to dazzle with his skills, playing his part in the European Ryder Cup victory in 2004 and, with four points out of a possible five, was the highest points scorer on either side during the 2008 Ryder Cup at Vallhala.

And with four top ten finishes in his last five events, including a win at the Barclays Singapore Open, he is planning to hit the ground running in the UAE capital.

"From previous experience, doing well in Abu Dhabi can lead to bigger and better things. Looking at the field, there is no doubt it's going to be tough, and I think this speaks volumes about how this event has matured. I'm really looking forward to it and bringing a touch of my own style to Abu Dhabi," said Poulter, who made a stunning hole-in-one at the 2008 Masters Tournament.
