Dubai: Former Scotland and Liverpool midfielder Gary McAllister will be playing in the DSA Open — the penultimate round of the Swing Against Cancer Golf Series — at Emirates Golf Club on September 14.

The series is organised by Sixteen10 and Worldwide Golf and has derived from the Mike Clark Charity Golf Day, which is held every year in memory of Mike Clark, a much-loved local golfer who died of bowel cancer in 2012.

There have been four events in this year’s series so far and the DSA Open will be the fifth ahead of the Mike Clark Charity Golf Day Grand Final at Jumeirah Golf Estates — where Clark used to work — on October 26.

The DSA Open is the last chance for amateur golfers to qualify for the Grand Final, where former England rugby captain Mike Tindall and New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell, who won the 2005 US Open, will also feature.

Professional golfers who win the Grand Final get Dh5,000 and a five-star golf holiday, while amateur winners receive spots in the DP World Tour Championship Pro-Am.

All proceeds go to Friends of Cancer Patients and Pink Caravan.

McAllister, who played for Leeds United and Coventry City, lost his first wife Denise to breast cancer in 2006, and is said to be a keen supporter of cancer charity initiatives.

Reza Sazegar, a friend of Mike Clark, and managing director of Sixteen10 said: “Sixteen10 raise money for charities by sourcing unique experiences and memorabilia from around the world and auctioning them at gala dinners and corporate events. In 2017 we’ve helped raise over $700,000 [Dh2.5 million] for our charity partners.

“Cancer is an illness close to our hearts, which is why we have partnered with Worldwide Golf to run the Swing Against Cancer Golf Series. Our aim is to grow the series internationally to help raise money and awareness for one of the most devastating and common illnesses in our society. By delivering truly unique and rewarding experiences we hope to unite golfers and people around to world to join us to Swing Against Cancer.”

To play in the DSA Open and attend the after event costs Dh795 or Dh745 for Emirates Golf Federation members and Dh345 for Emirates Golf Club members. For the evening only, which features a question-and-answer session with McAllister, it costs Dh350 or Dh3,000 for a table of 10.
