Lawson crowned Duty Free champions

Golfers were crowned overall champions in their respective Stableford and gross divisions

Dubai: John Mills of Arabian Ranches Golf Club and Ivan Lawson of Emirates Golf Federation were crowned overall champions in their respective Stableford and gross divisions of the 13th Dubai Duty Free Seniors Cup at Arabian Ranches Golf Club, last Saturday.

About 83 players competed in the open tournament for men and women aged 50 and 45 years and over. Each player used their handicap index as the tournament allowance to be used at the appropriate stroke index holes.

John Mills playing off a plus one handicap recorded six gross birdies with just one bogey on the card, taking 40 Stableford points. Most of his scoring was done on the front nine where he had 21 points followed by an inward half of 19 points.

Mills beat eventual Ladies Champion Fortuna Dougherty of Arabian Ranches by just a point. Dougherty managed to score no worse than one point on any given hole to win by two shots from Jane Bruce-Smith.

Meanwhile Ivan Lawson was awarded best gross score when he posted 73.

Also at Arabian Ranches, Tony Azoulay won the September Rivoli Monthly Medal with a gross score of 72.

Azoulay continued his rivalry with eventual runner-up and current Club Champion John Mills who posted a gross 74. The division A net title went to Kevin Melton who posted 65 edging Richard Hall by four shots. Division B honours went to Andy Scanlan with a net 72 to win one shot from Andy Barker on 73.

In the Ladies division, Adele McKelvey won the gross title with 79, while the round of the day went to Annie Hainey who posted a net 67 to win the title seven shots from Catherine Hut.
