So, here I am deliberating quite how I can select a topical golf story without mentioning the recent and somewhat peculiar antics of a certain Mr Woods.

Nope - it's just too hard. So what has the world No 1 been up to? With the world's media camped outside Woods-dom and with Tiger remaining tight-lipped, it really does beg the question - has the big man finally cracked? Is there a glitch in his bionic armour?

After all - even Superman couldn't quite get to grips with Kryptonite. For some, especially those on the major tours around the world, I am sure they will seek comfort in knowing that he is human after all.

For me, Tiger has been a hero and a true ambassador of the game for most of my professional career.

He's still the guy I always want to see win above all others, for he is the ultimate professional both on and off course, the true gentleman of the game - I guess you could say he is the epitome of the professional golfer.

It's still not clear exactly what happened that night, but with the media stories and general speculation pointing to sinister happenings, it looks like Tiger has derailed himself from what is normally the express lane to the podium.

Not wanting to sound cynical about the whole thing or immoral for that matter, but if anyone has earned the right to trip up or drop the ball, then it's him.

No matter whether you're a leading sports star, film star or pop star - when you live a life in such a public arena, with such an intensity of media glare and while having to handle the pressure of performing at the cutting edge of your profession - eventually something's got to give.

Everyone has a release valve and although not always will the resulting actions of an impromptu blowing of steam be proper or even allowable (especially by those held closest), they should at very least be explicable.

One of Tiger's great strengths is his uncanny ability to feed off the moment - to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. On the course he is machine-like in his work as well as damn-near invincible, it is a fact that most players live in fear of him and are directly affected by his awesome presence.

Can this just be switched off when it comes to living everyday life? Tiger's personal life has always been kept very private and now that his young family has been exposed to a barrage of "media-rites" it'll be an interesting few months at camp Woods to see how his focus holds as the new season looms.

I guess that one of the positives from the whole situation is that at least it's good timing - there isn't a major for over four months, which leaves him some time to adjust to playing without a halo and amid a sea of potential sniggering.

I will always be a big Tiger fan and I truly hope he hits back at his critics hard - it's a shame that at times the personal lives of such stars cannot be kept more private, but well - that is just the nature of the beast.
