Dubai: The Montgomerie, Dubai, hosted an impressive field of golfers for the inaugural Thomas Falknor Memorial Golf Tournament last Friday.

A total of 144 golfers teamed up for a shamble format utilising 3/4 handicap, with the best 2 nett scores counting towards the total team score, while simultaneously playing for individual nett prizes.

Golfers braved the blistering heat to commemorate the passing of a friend and be a part of a fund-raising exercise to benefit colorectal cancer research that is currently being conducted by The Institute of Cancer Research in the United Kingdom.

More than Dh104,000 was raised from the day's proceedings.

Thomas Falknor, one of the founding members of The Montgomerie, Dubai, died from colon cancer in August 2005. The tournament was organised by his family and the club.

Several items were auctioned live during a gala dinner. These included a shirt signed by the members of the Tottenham Hotspurs soccer team and gloves belonging to England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

The event was sponsored by leading Dubai business houses such as Anglo Irish Bank, Oilfields Supply Centre, Afridi & Angel, Jebel Ali International, Nakheel, Ashburton, Fosroc International, Lufthansa German Airlines, Jumeirah and Rasi Hassan Sa'adi Group. It was supported by Precise, A Little Gift & Card Company, Pocari Sweat, Pepsi and Pro Sports.
