Dubai: Subhash Bawkar of the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club (DCGYC) made use of his local knowledge to claim the 20th Dubai Duty Free Seniors Cup that took place at the DCGYC course last week.

With a total of 81 competitors in the fray, it was Bawkar who came to the fore with a score of 40 Stableford points and the title in the 20th edition of this annual competition. “It is an absolute honour to win such a prestigious competition. This is a very proud moment for me and my thanks go to Dubai Duty Free and my club,” Bawkar said.

The Men’s Division was as fiercely contested with six players managing scores of 37 stableford points. The top two players had to be decided on a countback over the final nine holes leading to Mohammad Al Musharrekh and Min Chul Shin claiming the top two prizes.

The Ladies Division was also tightly contested with a single point separating Haide Wright and Maureen Platt who were awarded the winner’s and runner-up prizes. On the par 3, eighth and 14th holes, Patrick Morrow and Sandra Anderson showed great accuracy from the tee to win the nearest pin prizes, while John Fellingham and Haide Wright — the competition’s only double prize winner — showed how well they were driving the ball by claiming the longest drive prizes on the fourth and 12th holes. The best gross prize went to scratch handicapper Wayne Smith following his round of 76, equal to a stableford score of 32.

Colm McLoughlin, Executive vice-chairman and CEO, Dubai Duty Free, said: “This is the 20th running of the seniors’ tournament and we had some incredible scoring. Our thanks go to all our participants and to the Dubai Creek Golf and Yacht Club for their efforts in ensuring a great day of golf.”
