Sharjah: A pair of Wellington International School Dubai staff members have completed their attempt to set a new world record on Sunday, when they played a marathon 162 holes of golf — all on foot — in a 24-hour period.

The two Britons, Andrew Morley and Stephen Jenks, hobbled up Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club's ninth hole to complete their attempt just as the clock struck the 24-hour mark at 9pm.

The event, which was supported by Sharjah Charity International and was used to raise funds for an eye hospice in Bangladesh.

Morley and Jenks are hoping to make it into the Guinness World Records for the most golf holes completed on foot in a day.

Overwhelmed

The duo, both faculty members at Wellington International School, were exhausted but overwhelmed at the end, bearing blisters, cramps and swollen joints.

Jenks spoke of the numerous second winds he experienced in the gruelling 24 hours, how the lowest point came at around 4am, when the pair had been out for seven hours and it was dark, cold, windy and there was still such a long way to go. He also explained how, once the previous record of 150 holes had been surpassed — after 22 hours and 10 minutes — the last 12 holes seemed relatively easy.

Morley went on to add their thanks to Sharjah Golf and Shooting Club, which had allowed them exclusive use of the course for almost the entire 24 hours

Sharjah Charity International was also thanked for their efforts in raising funds for the event. The event's corporate supporters include Harradine Golf and Orient Irrigation, Hydroturf, The European Tour, Al Nawras Hospitality and Expand-a-sign.

Donations

As of Sunday night, the pair had raised about Dh42,000, with donations still being accepted until the end of the week.
