Abu Dhabi: India golfer Shiv Kapur is backing Europe to maintain their Ryder Cup dominance over the United States this year after their thrashing of his compatriot Jeev Milkha Singh’s Asian team in the EurAsia Cup earlier this month.

Kapur finished a fine tied for 11th on 10-under at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on Sunday and said he is a keen supporter of the European Tour.

While the US will prove much sterner opposition to Asia, who were thumped 18½ — 5½ by Europe in the EurAsia Cup in Malaysia, Kapur foresees a third straight defeat for the Americans when the event is held this autumn.

Europe the favourite

“I think Europe always go in as favourites,” he told Gulf News.

“But it is in America and there are a lot of good American golfers like Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson, but Europe always do better in team formats for whatever reason.

“But I’m always rooting for Europe and I’m hoping they win.”

Of his own brilliance in Abu Dhabi, which included a third-round 65, Kapur said this owed much to extensive work on his short game during the off-season.

“Putting has been my biggest improvement said the Delhi-born 33-year-old, who has three professional titles to his name.
