A cut above: Kaymer fit to succeed Langer
Ever since he burst on to the European Tour as the Rookie of the Year in 2007, Kaymer has only gone one way — up!
The PGA Championship was an absolutely stunning win for Martin Kaymer, and I cannot think of a more deserving winner than the extremely hard-working and down-to-earth German.
The two clutch putts he made in the closing stages of the tournament — a 15-footer for par on the final hole of regulation play to make it to the play-off, and the 20-footer birdie putt on the second playoff hole to even the scores following Bubba Watson's birdie on the first — were indicators enough as to why Kaymer deserves to be in the exalted circle of Major champions. A sure display of mental strength.
Ever since he burst on to the European Tour as the Rookie of the Year in 2007, Kaymer has only gone one way — up! I have no hesitation in saying that Germany has finally found a worthy successor of the legendary Bernhard Langer.
The next step for Martin will be to play a part in Europe's bid to reclaim the Ryder Cup crown. I know he is very excited about the prospect of being at Celtic Manor. In 2008, captain Nick Faldo had taken him to Valhalla as an understudy and Martin loved every moment of the team battle.
