Vieri to be compensated over phone-tapping affair

Rome: Former Italian international striker Christian Vieri is set to be compensated after he fell victim to a phone-tapping affair, it was reported Monday.

A dossier on Vieri, 39, was discovered by chance in 2006 as part of an unrelated investigation into the Italian telephone company Telecom Italia.

It later transpired that his former club, Inter Milan, had been "spying on him", according to the Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper website.

In 2008 he sued the company for a total of 12 million euros and Inter for 9.25 million after complaining of "stalking and the wrongful acquisition of phone records", according to the website.

The website said Vieri's movements had been closely followed by his club via the telephone company during the 2000-01 season and again in 2004.

The report did not immediately say how much compensation the now retired striker, who was capped 49 times, would receive.
