Seoul: South Korea coach Uli Stielike has promised to deliver winning football to the team that struggled at the World Cup.

The German coach, speaking on Monday just hours after arriving in the country, was appointed on Friday. He replaced Hong Myung-bo, who resigned in July after the 2002 World Cup semi-finalists collected only one point from three games in Brazil.

Stielike, a former Real Madrid midfielder, signed a contract until the 2018 World Cup. The 59-year-old German’s first game in charge will come against Paraguay on October 10 — a warm-up for January’s Asian Cup, when South Korea will take on Australia, Kuwait and Oman in their group.

His first duties include observing South Korea’s friendly with Uruguay on Monday.
