Manama: Qatar's neighbours could host some matches during the World Cup in 2022, the head of the international governing body, said in an interview to the French daily L'Equipe.

Qatar was last week picked as the host of the quadrennial championship, making it the first Arab, Muslim and Middle Eastern country to organise the world's most popular games.

"With Qatar, football has opened up to a new world and a new culture," Fifa President Sepp Blatter said.

"The Arab world has tried several times to host the World Cup, through Morocco and Egypt. Now they can legitimately claim the right to stage the games," Blatter told the French sports daily.
