Dubai: Teddy Sheringham says current Spurs stars such as Harry Kane and Dele Alli needn’t leave the North London club in pursuit of silverware like he once had to.

The 51-year-old former England striker left Tottenham Hotspur for Manchester United in 1997 after five years at White Hart Lane without a trophy, citing the need to add honours to his resume.

He went on to win the treble under Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999, getting a stoppage-time equaliser and the assist to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s winner in United’s 2-1 Champions League final triumph over Bayern Munich at the Nou Camp.

The fear now is that Kane and Alli might take a similar route to enhance their careers, but Sheringham — who is in Dubai this week coaching at the ‘It’s Just Football’ academy — insists they no longer have to.

“The reason I left Tottenham many years ago was that I wanted to win things at the top level, but Tottenham players don’t have to leave now,” he said at ‘An audience with ...’ at the Dhow and Anchor at Jumeirah Beach Hotel in Dubai on Sunday. “They are getting a new stadium, their manager [Mauricio Pochettino] is fantastic, all the players love playing for Tottenham, it’s a massive club and they are on the up.

“They are getting good money, it may not be the biggest but when you enjoy where you play it means more than earning top, top money and going somewhere else where you don’t want to be. So they’ve no need to go anywhere and I can see them staying for a long time to come.”

Spurs are four points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea with four games to go and look set to narrowly miss out on the title for a second consecutive season. But Sheringham, who scored nearly 100 goals in over 200 games over two spells at the club, said that wouldn’t always be the case.

“Tottenham are getting better and better each game they play. They may have lost the FA Cup semi-final to Chelsea last week but they really took the game to Chelsea. They really pressed them and tried to outrun, outplay and out-battle them all over the pitch. That tells me that they are getting a lot better and closer to the top teams.”

Asked what they would need to do next season to go one better in the table, he replied: “When you look at the 11 they put out it’s very solid, but when you look at the bench it’s not enough.

“If they want to put on a show across four fronts next season; in the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup, they need a bigger squad and they need to enhance with four or five players who can come in and do a similar job to what the first team players do.”

Singling out the goal scorers in Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday, he said of Kane: “He’s exceptional and will go all the way to the top. If he was for sale now he could go anywhere he wanted to.

“He can drop back in the same mould as I did but he’s also very comfortable in the number nine role playing like Alan Shearer. He’s got a little bit of everything in his game and scores all sorts of goals from everywhere, which makes him a livewire.”

And of Alli he said: “He’ll be phenomenal. He’s still young and learning his trade but he’s already performing at the top level. He’s got everything to be a top player, he’s so composed in the final third, loves getting forward like Paul Scholes and Frank Lampard, but when he gets there he takes his chance. He’s a cool and composed finisher in and around the box, and is England’s next one coming through.”
