Liverpool: Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was at the centre of a health scare on Wednesday which forced him to miss training.
Klopp was taken to hospital after reporting ill to the club’s medical staff and was urged to undergo further tests. The manager had started to feel unwell overnight.
The 50-year-old German was self-admitted to a Liverpool hospital. He was released from medical care without requiring an overnight stay, and his club offered a positive diagnosis, which suggested the issue was not serious.
The precise details of the complaint are yet to be revealed, but no surgery is required and Klopp is reported to be feeling much better.
A decision will be taken today as to whether Klopp can resume his managerial duties ahead of Saturday’s Premier League fixture with Southampton. A statement on the Liverpool website read: “Jurgen Klopp attended a hospital appointment today as a precautionary measure, after feeling ill.
“He is being assessed by doctors and will be absent from training on Wednesday as a result. There are currently no plans for Jurgen to remain in hospital beyond his appointment and he will therefore return home this evening. However, he may require further check-ups in the coming days.
“The club urges that the privacy of Jurgen, his family and other patients is respected while attending hospital visits.”
Klopp is still expected to host his weekly press conference at the Melwood training ground and there is nothing to suggest he will not be fit enough to stand on the sidelines this weekend.
Many senior players were not involved with their country over the past fortnight, although Klopp did take the opportunity to travel overseas, taking a break in South Africa.
It is not the first time he has been involved in a health scare since joining Liverpool. In February 2016, he missed a home game against Sunderland after suffering appendicitis. On that occasion his assistants Peter Krawietz and Zelko Buvac took control of the team.
Liverpool have a hectic schedule ahead, including a trip to Sevilla in the Champions League next week.
Klopp also had to pull out of a scheduled appearance at the star-studded Liverpool premiere of the movie Kenny — a documentary tribute to Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish — which was held in the city on Wednesday night.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson declared himself fit and midfielder Adam Lallana returned to full training ahead of Saturday’s Premier League home game against Southampton.
“It was my first proper session back today,” Henderson said. “I felt good and, hopefully, I can play a part at the weekend.”
