Dubai: Dwight Yorke has urged Jose Mourinho not to abandon Manchester United’s attacking traditions in favour of a win-at-all-costs approach.

The former Red Devils striker believes United have “a realistic chance” of winning the English Premier League next season under the tutelage of Mourinho, who was appointed manager in May.

But while he accepts the Portuguese’s “winning mentality” is irrefutable, Yorke concedes “people will always question his style” given Mourinho’s reputation for pragmatism rather than flair.

“We are in the entertainment arena,” the 44-year-old told Gulf News, after promoting United’s partnership with Gulf Oil Middle East in Dubai on Thursday. “We want to see entertaining football. We don’t want to see boring one-nils or two-nils. Who wants to see that?

“There’s a way of winning football matches and United have a certain way.”

Yorke was, like many United fans, unimpressed with United’s dour approach under the club’s former coach Louis van Gaal.

“When you’re not winning matches, like in the last couple of seasons, you find you become a more defensive team like any other team in the world would do,” added Yorke, who won three Premier League titles at Old Trafford between 1998 and 2002. “Let’s hope that they’ll get off to a winning start and see these players express themselves in a far more advanced way.”
