Burnley: Burnley moved out of the Premier League relegation zone after stretching their unbeaten run to four matches with a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle United on Tuesday.
George Boyd put the promoted side ahead with a low strike from outside the box in the 34th minute at Turf Moor, with Senegalese striker Papiss Cisse equalising for Newcastle early in the second half.
The draw, in the teams’ first meeting since March 1983, enabled Burnley to climb out of the bottom three at the expense of Hull City, who visit Everton on Wednesday, and left Newcastle five points below the top four in 10th place.
Burnley’s Danny Ings went into the game chasing a fifth goal in six league games and he was quickly involved, testing Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot with an early snapshot and teeing up Ashley Barnes to curl over.
Newcastle had their first sight of goal in the 32nd minute, but when Ayoze Perez’s flick sent Mehdi Abeid clean through, Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton rushed out to save.
The breakthrough arrived two minutes later, with Boyd crashing home from outside the area after Kieran Trippier’s lofted pass was chested down by Ings.
David Jones should have extended Burnley’s lead in first-half stoppage time, only to blaze off-target from Ings’s back-heel, and three minutes into the second period, the visitors drew level.
After Burnley failed to clear their lines, Dutch full-back Daryl Janmaat swept the ball back into the box and Cisse kneed home the equaliser from eight yards out.
Newcastle manager Alan Pardew had sent on Remy Cabella and Steven Taylor at the interval, but although the substitutes helped the visitors enjoy the best of the second half, they had to settle for a point.
