Manama: Oman’s consultative assembly is investigating the nation’s football association (OFA) over alleged financial irregularities following their woeful Gulf Cup campaign.
The Majlis Al Shura wants answers from OFA chairman Sayyid Khalid Al Busaidi after Oman finished bottom of Group A with just one point from their three matches in Bahrain. They drew 0-0 against the hosts but then lost 2-1 to Qatar and 2-0 to UAE.
Head coach Paul Le Guen’s pre-tournament contract extension is also expected to come under scrutiny, with Oman Arabic Daily claiming the Frenchman is now earning OMR35,000 (Dh334,000) a month.
Shura member Sultan Al Abri told the Times of Oman: “We have decided to question the OFA chairman in the presence of the minister of sports affairs on suspicious expenditures of the OFA and the shoddy performance of the national team in the Gulf Cup.
“Most of the questions were about the expenditures of the OFA and suspicious deals and irregularities that took place in the association and the invalidity of its elections.
“The Shura will also open the file of the coach’s new contract, which was extended until 2016 despite the old contract still holding good for one more year.”
