  • Coach Diego Maradona has issued an ultimatum to the board of Al Wasl in request for more transfer funds in order to stay fully competitive next season

Dubai: Al Wasl Club has sacked Diego Maradona as their chief coach along with his support staff, according to a decision taken by it's new board late on Tuesday evening.

Confirming the news, a club spokesperson said: "The new board of Al Wasl met today and decided to discontinue the services of Maradona for the new season of 2012-13. A decision on his replacement will be taken later."

The Argentine legend, incidentally, had a two-year contract with the club of which only one year was over. Asked about the contractual obligations, the spokesperson said: "There are of course exit clauses for both parties concerned."

The club had finished eighth in the etisalat Pro League last season and bowed out of Etisalat Cup and President's Cup at the knockout stages.

They, however, came agonisingly close to winning the GCC Champions League before losing the second leg final at home in tie-breaker.

I agreed with Mr Sadat, Maradona is a legend, there are so many people who still love him inspite of his behavior. At least we will have some good memories of him for being the coach of AL WASL team. I wish him all the best WHEREVER he goes.

EGO came in the way of football from both parties. Good luck to both. ps. Coaches cannot make miracles happen in one year. Time is needed...

No doubt Maradona is a legend. He owned 1986 world cup, but as a coach you have always limitations. Wish you all the best.

Diego Maradona is a legend, please use more appropriate wording, his contract was terminated and not sacked, I became a fan of Al wasel because of him and will not be a fan of Al Wasel anymore.

Hi guys! Shocked to read this news. However, a kind request, instead of word "Sacked" kindly use "Contract discontinued", because each word has a different meaning. We should respect the legend and he has helped our Team in many ways. Maybe it's his or our bad luck to lose him. Anyway wish him good luck from UAE people.

I expected this from the beginning and confirmed after the first set of games. But don't know what lead to total failure of his team, was it his own fault or the players?
