Mumbai: FC Pune City have signed former Arsenal and Liverpool winger Jermaine Pennant as a replacement for injured Colombian Omar Andres Rodriguez.

Rodriguez will not play the rest of the Indian Super League (ISL) season due to a kidney complaint, so the club has instead turned to former teen sensation Pennant.

The Englishman joined Arsenal from Notts County in 1999, at the age of 15, for a fee of £2 million — a record for a trainee.

After a spell at Birmingham City. in 2006 he moved to Liverpool on a four-year contract and played more than 50 times for them. He was instrumental in Liverpool’s run to the 2007 Uefa Champions League final.

During his career, Pennant also played for Premier League sides Stoke City and Portsmouth, as well as in Spain’s La Liga for Real Zaragoza. Though never capped as a full England international, he played for the England under-21 team more than 20 times.
