Abu Dhabi: Al Ain, after having put an end to Al Wahda’s unbeaten run last week, continued their resurgence in the Arabian Gulf League when they moved to the top of the table by taming Bani Yas 3-0 in the latter’s den Baniyas Stadium on Sunday.

Ghanaian striker Asamoah Gyan, coming into the match after serving an AFC Champions League suspension, was back into the groove quickly and scored a brace while Miroslav Stoch completed the tally for the winners.

Al Ain now have 23 points from 10 outings, while Bani Yas are placed seventh with 18 points after playing 12 matches. It took a while for Al Ain to get their act together but once they got the measure of things, they were all over Bani Yas.

Gyan broke the deadlock in the 37th minute with a superb strike, controlling the ball between two defenders after being fed with a long ball from the deep by Stoch.

A pumped up Al Ain quickly widened the lead to 2-0 in the 41st minute, again it was a high quality strike but this time Stoch showing his class.

Bani Yas defenders were guilty of providing Stoch with enough space and time to show his guile and the Slovak curled the ball enough to leave custodian Mohsin Al Hashmi rooted. Midfielder Ebrahim Diaky twice had the ball in the net during the first half, but both times saw the offside flag raised.

Soon after the change of ends, the home team had a good chance to reduce the margin but they failed to capitalise. Gyan once again got into the scoring act after a defensive blunder from Kim Jung Woo, whose needless header towards his goalkeeper was pounced on by the former. After dribbling past the onrushing custodian Al Hashmi, Gyan then found the goal with ease.

Thereafter, Gyan almost managed to get his hat-trick by putting the ball in the back of the net twice but on both occasion the offside flag was raised.

In another match, Al Wasl defeated Al Fujairah 3-1 after both teams were tied 0-0 at half time. Caio Canedo Correa, Ali Salmeen and Ederson Alves scored a goal apiece for Al Wasl while the consolation goal for Fujairah was scored by Mohammad Khalfan Ali.
