A footballer died after suffering internal injuries from a horror challenge in an Indonesian Premier League match.

Akli Fairuz, a striker for Persiraja, was hurt as he raced to get the ball ahead of PSAP Sigli goalkeeper Agus Rahman, the Daily Mail reported.

The goalkeeper jumped into the air and caught Fairuz on the body with his boot. The injured man left the field and watched the rest of the game from the sidelines, but later died in hospital.

The incident unfolded when Rahman fumbled a shot from a Persiraja player and sprinted out of his goal to recover the ball.

Fairuz (far side in orange, behind number 17) came running in the opposite direction, sniffing a clear chance to score.

The striker reaches the ball well ahead of Rahman, and gets a shot away into the goal. But by this time Rahman was airborne.

The goalkeeper flew through the air in the direction of the striker, unable to avoid digging his right boot into the player’s torso.

Fairuz falls back in pain, with Rahman and the PSAP player ending in a heap in the penalty area.

Persiraja players surround the referee after the clash to demand action. They have to be separated by security officials.

The Mail reported Fairuz was admitted to hospital and tragically died a few days after the tackle after suffering bladder leakage.
