London: England and the Republic of Ireland will play a friendly at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium on June 7 next year, the Football Association and Football Association of Ireland announced on Tuesday.

“It will be a significant moment for England to play in Dublin again, and due to the hard work by both organisations on many fronts, we fully expect it to be a fantastic occasion enjoyed by both sets of fans,” Club England managing director Adrian Bevington told the FA website.

The historic rivals played out a 1-1 draw at Wembley Stadium in May 2013, but they have not faced each other in Ireland since a friendly at Lansdowne Road had to be abandoned due to crowd violence in February 1995.

Both teams will use the fixture to tune up for Euro 2016 qualifying matches. England are due to visit Slovenia in Group E on June 14, with Ireland hosting Scotland in Group D a day earlier.

The 1995 fixture was called off in the 27th minute after fans in the away section threw missiles onto the pitch and fought with riot police. More than 20 people were injured and there were 40 arrests.
