Dubai: Diego Maradona ended up watching replays of son-in-law Sergio Aguero's last-gasp English Premier League title-winning goal against QPR on Sunday on the phones of Al Wasl fans outside Zabeel Stadium, having missed the historic game because of training.

Aguero ended the club's 44-year wait for the title in the 94th minute of the last game of the season at the Etihad Stadium, just three minutes after Edin Dzeko had equalised to make it 2-2.

But Aguero's injury-time winner rounded off one of the most climactic and closely fought seasons ever, with City winning the title on goal difference after the clubs finished level on 89 points.

Maradona said: "I asked the score at one point and QPR were 2-1 up and I was very upset. Then in the changing room after we had finished training, I heard what happened and I was absolutely ecstatic.

"I was so happy, I was smiling from ear to ear. I enjoyed the news with all my heart. The whole Maradona family is extremely happy. I spoke to Sergio and my daughter Giannina and my grandson Benjamin. I congratulated them all and we shared the great moment."

"Aguero has proved again he is a world-class player and it takes a true champion to score a winner like that in the 52nd second of the 94th minute in the last game of a season."
