Ultramarathoner is 700 km short of his 1,600-km target in the region
Dubai: Filipino ultra-marathon runner Cesar Guarin is back in the UAE to complete stage seven of his 16-phase global run this week.
The 57-year-old from Manila aims to become the first Asian and only the fourth person to run a distance equivalent to the circumference of the earth — 42,000km, by 2017.
So far, Guarin has run over 16,000 km but still has 26,000 km to complete. In May, he ran 900 km of an intended 1,600-km stage through the GCC but was not able to meet his target due to visa issues in Saudi Arabia. He is now back in the UAE to complete the remaining 700 km.
Starting on Friday, Guarin aims to run through all seven emirates in a clockwise direction from Abu Dhabi to Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah, before heading back to the capital via Al Ain within 22 days.
Guarin, who has previously dedicated runs to Overseas Filipino Workers, said: “This time there is extra sentiment. I am dedicating my run to all the victims and survivors of the recent typhoon and earthquake, which has devastated central Philippines. We are not allowed to raise funds but we are doing the run to keep the spirit of helping those affected by the recent calamities alive.”
Having run the first leg of stage seven in mid summer, Guarin says he is looking forward to more friendly weather.
