1990 final: Argentina 0 West Germany 1, Stadio Olimpico, Rome

The Germans gained revenge for their final defeat of four years earlier with a scrappy victory in the 1990 showpiece in Italy.

Argentina summed up their physical approach to the tournament as they were shorn of four players for the final through suspension and then saw two more red-carded in the 90 minutes. Half-time substitute Pedro Monzon suffered the indignity of being the first player sent off in a World Cup final when he was dismissed by Mexican referee Edgardo Codesal for a tackle on Juergen Klinsmann in the 65th minute.

After Andreas Brehme scored the only goal from the penalty spot five minutes from time, Gustavo Dezotti followed Monzon down the tunnel after being given a second yellow card.

Argentina went home in disgrace, despite having the talent of Diego Maradona at their disposal, while West Germany celebrated their third World Cup title.
