1986 final: Argentina 3 West Germany 2, Estadio Azteca, Mexico City

The first final meeting between Argentina and Germany saw legendary player Diego Maradona claim his one and only World Cup winner’s medal.

The brilliant forward set up the winning goal for Jorge Burruchaga to decide a classic match, as Maradona’s through pass split the German defence and Burruchaga calmly rolled the ball past keeper Karald Schumacher.

Jose Luis Brown opened the scoring with a header from a free-kick after a mistake by Schumacher, before Jorge Valdano finished well to give Argentina a two-goal lead after 56 minutes.

Close range strikes from Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Rudi Voeller had Germany level again inside the final 10 minutes, but there was still time for Burruchaga to intervene and give Argentina the glory.
