France rested many first-choice players for their final group match against Ecuador – which ended up being a dour goalless draw – and they now face the challenge of having to rediscover the form that brought them eight goals in their first two games. Les Bleus’ forward line is capable of running through Nigeria, but today’s outcome could well depend on the approach Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi adopts. Nigeria took four points as they kept back-to-back clean sheets against Iran and Bosnia, but they then lost 3-2 against Argentina when playing a more open game, even though forward Ahmad Musa shone. It may not be attractive for the neutrals, but Nigeria would be better off trying to shut up shop against the French. Prediction: France 2 Nigeria 0.
Germany vs Algeria
Algeria have exceeded all expectations by reaching the last 16, but their fully committed players and fervent support won’t want to stop there. Admittedly they will be massive underdogs for today’s match against Germany, but their situation is far from hopeless. The Germans failed to convince against Ghana and the USA after their brilliant start against Portugal and, if the Fennec Foxes’ defence can keep Thomas Mueller shackled and the midfield can get plenty of crosses into the box, they can give their illustrious opponents a major scare. Prediction: Germany 2 Algeria 1.
