Al Zawawi relishes prospect of Dempo challenge
Sharjah coach Yousuf Al Zawawi is relishing the prospect of hosting Goan outfit Dempo Sports Club in their play-off for the Asian Champions League (ACL) 2009.
Dubai: Sharjah coach Yousuf Al Zawawi is relishing the prospect of hosting Goan outfit Dempo Sports Club in their play-off for the Asian Champions League (ACL) 2009.
The ACL play–offs have been divided into West and East qualifiers with each zone providing one winner for the main competition next year. The draw for the ACL play–offs was held in Kuala Lumpur last weekend with Sharjah drawn to face Dempo SC on February 25.
Thailand's Provincial Electricity Authority will host the Singapore Armed Force FC at the Thammasat University in the first match on February 18. The winner will then play at home against Indonesia's PSMS Medan on February 25.
"We really do not know anything much about our opponents [Dempo FC]," Al Zawawi stated. "But we know that it is a play–off and we need to win this one match to advance to the main competition. We have the advantage of playing at home," Al Zawawi added.
Play–off match schedule:
(East) February 18, 2009: Provincial Electricity Authority FC (Thailand) vs Singapore Armed Forces FC (Singapore), 6pm, Thammasat University Rangsit Stadium. February 25, 2009: Winner of February 18 match vs PSMS Medan (Indonesia). Venue: Thammasat University (6pm) or Jalan Besar Stadium (7.30pm).
(West) February 25, 2009: Sharjah, UAE vs Dempo, India 7pm, Sharjah Stadium.
