Dubai: Arabic TV reports on Sunday claiming to have sources confirming the sacking of Diego Maradona as Al Wasl coach were false, club chairman Mohammad Ahmad Bin Fahad has officially announced.

Speaking on the sidelines of the newly formed board’s first formal meeting at Zabeel Stadium, Fahad told Gulf News: “They [Arabic media] made a mistake. Maradona is the head coach of Al Wasl club, he is the coach of Al Wasl team and he continues with complete authority for the programme.

“Maradona is continuing. There is no change in his position. Up to now – and there is no further information [on this matter] – Maradona is the coach of Al Wasl next season.”

Reports broke Sunday lunchtime on social networking sites suggesting Maradona’s imminent departure following the resignation of the club’s original board Thursday and the reinstatement of a new committee.

Maradona led his team to eighth in the league and was knocked out of the Etisalat and President’s Cup in the semi and quarter final phase also losing in the final of the GCC Champions League.
