Andrew Strauss on Tuesday night hailed England's fantastic performance to win the World Twenty20 and celebrated it with an unbeaten 54 for Middlesex against Surrey.
While Strauss was happy for Paul Collingwood's team, he also signalled that he saw no reason why the success in the Caribbean should affect his position as captain of England in 50-overs cricket.
"The reason I am not playing in Twenty20 is that you could see how crucial it is to have guys who can clear the ropes early on and they did a brilliant job at that," he said.
Fifty overs is a bit different, but there no doubt we will continue to play positive cricket. While competition for places is good, it has gone quite well for me in the 50-overs game recently.
I'll have to sit down with Andy (Flower) but I think there a role for me in that. What was great about the Caribbean was that it is the first time in limited-overs cricket that I have seen England not only play better than anyone else, but clearly believe that we are better than anyone else."
Regains form
Nine months after holding the Ashes aloft at the same ground, Strauss returned to The Oval on Tuesday in search of runs before the Test against Bangladesh at Lord's next week.
While his authority as Test captain is hardly in doubt, there will inevitably be questions over his place in the 50-over team following the weekend's triumph.
After a frustrating start to the season, which had seen him make just 262 runs in 11 innings with just one 50, he finally found form as Middlesex finished the day on 148-0 in reply to Surrey 490 in the LV County Championship.
