Dubai: Unlike Pakistan who have one captain for all forms of the game, Sri Lanka have a different captain for One Day Internationals (ODIs) in Upul Tharanga.

Sri Lanka’s ODI team has six players from the Test squad, including the Test team captain Dinesh Chandimal, who helped the visitors inflict a 2-0 defeat on Pakistan in the UAE this week.

When asked whether the presence of so many players across both formats gives the team the confidence to beat Pakistan in one-dayers too, Tharanga said: “The Test team had the hunger to perform well. The players who have come into the ODI team should also have the same hunger to win.

“We spoke a lot about how they (the Test team) won. We did not win the Test series by planning for just a day but we had our plans well laid down many days ahead.

“The players and support staff did take a lot of pain to earn this success.”

Tharanga said that there were different situations during the Tests. “All the situations were handled properly,” he added. “This is what we have to carry forward in the ODIs, too. We have the confidence, the new players have spoken to the players who played in the Tests also with the coaches regarding the ground and conditions.

“We have got all the information we need from them.”

Tharanga also revealed that they have fully analysed their performance against India. “We accept that we didn’t play well against India,” he said. “We had two occasions of winning against India but we failed. The failure mainly was from the batting side,

“We started off well but kept losing wickets in the middle. We have spoken a lot about it.

“If you take the last few ODIs we have not batted our quota of 50 overs and we have spoken about it with the batsmen and what we expect from them. We take all this into tomorrow’s match. In the Tests we saw that the batsmen had a hunger to score runs. I hope the ODI batsmen will also have the same hunger and give us the totals to win,” said Tharanga.

“We have to do our basics right. The Test team has done really well due to it. All the credit goes to the players as they handled the situation really well. In the ODIs it’s not like the Tests we have to win more battles from the first ball. When you are playing ODI cricket, you have to be at our best in batting bowling and fielding.”
