Abu Dhabi: The MCC-Zayed Cricket Academy’s under-17 and under-13 teams have both embarked on tours to the United Kingdom.

The older group left for Newcastle to participate in a competition organised by the Durham County Cricket Club that runs until August 10, while the younger players will be taking part in the annual SportArabia Cup in association with Sussex County Cricket Club from August 9 to 15.

“These tours and the competitions are good experience and learning curve for the young aspiring cricketers,” said Qazi Ayub, the head coach, who is travelling with the youth teams as manager.

“The academy has been participating in such competitions every year for the past seven years and, like every year, it provides new players the experience of playing against top notch English counties and schools as well as some foreign teams in English conditions,” added Ayub, who felt the tournaments have worked wonders in improving local talent in Abu Dhabi.

“Many of those who have taken part in such tours and the competitions have made it to the UAE age group teams. So the experience can certainly help those who want to reach the next level.”

The teams underwent a month-long training camp ahead of the tour and the coach was confident they would put up a good show.

“We have a pretty good young side in both age groups who are raring to go. They have prepared well and are high on morale. Hopefully they will put up a solid performance and make their presence felt,” said Ayub.

The academy’s tours are supported by Abu Dhabi Cricket Club and co-sponsored by One Stop Tourism.
