Wellington: Off-spinner Jeetan Patel has been recalled to the New Zealand cricket team after a three-year absence as a replacement for injured Mark Craig, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the test series against India.

Craig injured his left side while bowling during the first Test at Kanpur. He is expected to be sidelined for four weeks, meaning he’ll miss the Tests at Kolkata and Indore.

The 36-year-old Patel last played for New Zealand in 2013, but has regularly performed well for Warwickshire in the English country championship.

Coach Mike Hesson said Patel “is up to speed from a bowling load perspective having recently completed a successful county season so he will be ready for the rigours of Test cricket.”
