It took the visitors just 20 overs to snare the Indian batsmen, as Irfan Pathan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni were the only two to reach double digit scores.
Earlier Dale Steyn took 5 wickets for 23 off 8 overs, and quick bowlers Makhaya Ntini bagged Morne Morkel shared 5 wickets between them.
The first Test in Chennai ended in a draw.
