Sharjah: England pacer Steven Finn produced a deadly four-wicket spell, while Pakistan A wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal cracked an unbeaten half-century on the first day of the second two-day tour match between the teams at the Sharjah Stadium on Thursday.

Finn returned impressive figures of 4 for 16 from his 14 overs, while Adnan’s unbeaten 74 off 149 balls contained seven boundaries. Pakistan A were bowled out for 192 in 90 overs.

Finn, who is 6ft 7in tall, was playing in his first match on the tour and generated excellent pace after England won the toss and elected to field first.

He took the wicket of opener Khurram Manzoor by forcing him to edge to Jonny Bairstow for four runs in the ninth over.

Finn also dismissed one–drop batsman Ali Assad for a duck, forcing him to edge to Ian Bell in the slips.

Fawad Alam, who hit a half-century in the first two-day match earlier this week, joined opener Sami Aslam, but he lasted only 15 balls. Off-spinner Moeen Ali made Alam edge to Ben Stokes for a duck. It was a terrible blow for Alam, who is competing for a place in Pakistan’s Test team.

Iftikhar Ahmad, who top scored in the first match with an unbeaten 92, batted confidently, even stepping out to hit Moeen for a six.

Aslam, who also hit Moeen for a maximum, looked in good touch and by lunch Pakistan were 42 for 3.

In the second over after the break, Finn struck twice. He trapped Iftikhar leg before for 10 and, two balls later, had Usman Salahuddin caught by Bell for a duck.

With half the side back in the pavilion for just 47 runs, Umar Amin joined Aslam. But Adil Rashid, who bowled an excellent line and length, had a well-set Sami out for 43 edging to Stokes.

Pakistan A’s chances of reaching the 100-run mark began to fade, but Adnan and Amin kept their heads down and pushed the score on slowly.

After steering the team’s total to three figures, the pair began to stroke fluently and by tea they had put on 47 runs for the seventh wicket.

Adnan reached his half-century off 81 balls with a boundary off Liam Plunkett.

The pair put on 83 in 29.4 overs before left-arm spinner Samit Patel took his first wicket as Amin edged to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler for 39.

The tourists’ captain Alastair Cook opted out of the match and rested pacers James Anderson and Stuart Broad and in-form batsman Joe Root.
