Sharjah: News of engagement between Pakistan's former skipper Shoaib Malek and Indian tennis icon Sania Mirza on a Pakistan TV Channel has spread like wildfire.

On Tuesday, Malek ended all speculation by telling fans on Twitter that he will marry Mirza in April.

Malek is currently in the UAE, turning out for Dhaka's Mohammadan Sporting Club in the ongoing PCL T20 Bashundhara Cup at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

Geo Television reported that the two sporting superstars had got engaged following a six-month long relationship.

When Gulf News contacted the team hotel in Ajman, a hotel official said that they are flooded with calls from different parts of the world asking for Malek. According to the official, he is now staying in Dubai.

According to the channel, Malek's mother went to the Indian city of Hyderabad and met Mirza's family and finalised the marriage. The channel also said that after their marriage, a reception will be held in Lahore on April 16-17.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has fined Malek and banned him from playing for one year for unspecified disciplinary reasons on the recommendation of an inquiry committee formed to evaluate the defeat in both test and limited-overs series against Australia this year.

The 23-year-old Mirza, from Hyderabad, ended a previous engagement to childhood friend Sohrab Mirza in January, citing incompatibility.
