Dubai: Former Pakistan cricket captain and legendary pacer Wasim Akram was the star attraction on the opening day of the second edition of the Gulf Super Sixes tournament.

He officially declared open the tournament at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in the presence of a large gathering of local cricketers and sports lovers.

Akram, who is also the brand ambassador of this event, unveiled the Super Sixes Cup for which 48 corporate teams will clash to win it. Speaking after the ceremony, Akram, who was surrounded by fans looking for autographs, said: "It's great to be back in Dubai again. I have witnessed some fantastic performances by the teams here at last year's inaugural tournament and I believe that this year, with the tournament being played in the round-robin format instead of knockout, the teams will have more than one chance to become the champions."

Twelve matches were held on the first day with Media Rotana, Byrne Rental Equipment and Al Faraa Group qualifying for the second stage of this tournament organised by Crayons Communications and supported by Dubai Sports City and Gulf Oil in association with Landmark Group.

Arshad Zaheer, Managing Director of Crayons Communications, announced that "our latest edition will blend sports, camaraderie, education, entertainment and excitement and involves the audience as an ongoing part of the tournament and gives them an opportunity to meet the legends".

Eight top cricketers from India, Pakistan, South Africa and Sri Lanka, called the "Landmark Group Team of Legends such as Wasim Akram and Imran Nazir (Pakistan), Vinod Kambli, Nayan Mongia and Maninder Singh (India), Lance Klusener (South Africa) and Sanath Jayasuriya and Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) will play from the quarterfinal stage.
