Dubai: Participating teams have already started arriving and setting up base for the Sharjah Grand Prix, the final round of the 2010 UIM Formula 1 World Powerboat Championships to be held at the Khalid Lagoon in Sharjah this weekend.

Organisers, the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) announced that everything is in place to receive international teams participating in the year's top powerboating event from Thursday to Saturday.

"We are prepared to host yet another successful running of the Sharjah Grand Prix, thus reaffirming Sharjah's leading position in organising global sporting events," said Mohammad Ali Al No'man, Director General of SCTDA.

Attending this year's finale will be media delegations from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Russia and the Ukraine, as well as media teams representing Italian and Chinese sports TV channels. The SCTDA has organised a number of tours for these delegations as part of its strategy to educate them on Sharjah's tourist attractions, particularly those in its Eastern Region and Heritage Area, including the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation and the Sharjah Aquarium.

Meeting the press

Meanwhile, the teams will join organisers and promoter Nicolo Di San Germano in a press meeting in Sharjah later today. Addressing the media will be Al No'man as he discloses details of the event that will have its practice and time trial run tomorrow followed by the Sharjah Grand Prix on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, the family-themed Sharjah Water Festival, also organised by the SCTDA has been drawing huge crowds along the Buhairah Corniche.

This year's festival has a wide array of water-themed and fun-filled family activities at the newly reopened Al Majaz Waterfront.

It boasts a variety of cultural and heritage activities designed by the Sharjah Museums Department, including a handicrafts show, UAE folk dancing shows and heritage competitions that depict the emirate's rich heritage and the customs and traditions.

There will also be stalls offering traditional Emirati food, all within the Heritage Village reflecting the emirate's love and its authentic history.

The 2010 festival activities also include children's entertainment shows at Mouj Island, which boasts an array of thrilling and amusing activities where children can enjoy diverse activities such as acrobatic pirate shows, face painting and competitions.
