Abu Dhabi: The UAE's pilot, Rashid Al Tayer, steered Team Abu Dhabi to win the first round of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in the World Championship of Class I powerboating on Thursday at the breakwater area on the capital's Corniche.

Al Tayer and his throttleman John Tomlinson overcame favourites Fazza 3, the leaders of the world championship, and Skydive Dubai as both boats suffered mechanical trouble that led to their retirement from the leading two places.

Victory 2010 came second led by Mohammad Al Merri and G. Malezi while Italian boat 50 Negatour finished third steered by Luca F. and Giovanni Carpitlla.

Fazza 3, led by Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hindi, retired on the 11th lap, while Skydive Dubai, Abdullah Al Muhairbi and Taleb Al Saeed, withdrew on the ninth lap. The second round of the AD GP will be held from 3pm on Friday.
