Cernobbio: Team Abu Dhabi's F1 racing sensation Ahmad Al Hameli will step up to the helm of a Class 1 offshore powerboat to replace the injured Rashid Al Tayer in this weekend's Italian Grand Prix, round three of the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship.

Al Tayer had an accident during a jet-ski race in the US and, although he is unhurt, the team management at the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) decided to replace him with Al Hameli.

According to the ADIMSC's assistant general manager Salem Al Romaithi, Al Hameli will team up with Majid Al Mansouri in Team Abu Dhabi's Class 1 No.5 boat on Lake Como in Italy.

Pinnacle of world offshore racing

Since entering the sport for a full season, Team Abu Dhabi has settled in well at the pinnacle of world offshore racing and their Michael Peters-designed and Victory-powered and built craft currently holds second position in the points' standings for the Edox Pole Position Championship, fifth in the World Championship and a similar position in the Middle East Championship.

This weekend's race at Cernobbio on Lake Como is the second round of the European Championship, in addition to being the third round of the World Championship and Al Hameli will be looking to impress.
